There will be a DANCE CALL.
Sandra Delgado’s La Havana Madrid
This play is a celebration: a music-filled kaleidoscope of the history of a long since forgotten nightclub in Chicago. The show is a duet between memory and music, and as such, seeks actors who can sing, dance, and/or play musical instruments. Musical styles include: popular music from the 60’s, funk, along with rhythms of cumbia, salsa, bolero, mambo, bomba, and many more.
While this play navigates the experiences of specific immigrant groups to the United States, we welcome Latiné/a/o/x Actors from all backgrounds to submit. This play takes place during an era when discrimination existed based on ethnicity and race. The ethnicity, race, and age indicated reflect what each character presents as. We invite actors of all ethnicities, races, and age to audition.
All roles feature some spoken text in Spanish, but are primarily written in English.
Note some of these roles will be double cast.
What to Prepare:
- One (1) min dramatic monologue
- Please note: specific roles ask for 32 bars of a piece of Latin music. (Open to any style: cumbia, salsa, bolero, mambo, bomba, etc). Please read the breakdown carefully.
Characters:
- LA HAVANA MADRID, age, race, and ethnicity open.
A timeless Ancestor. A style icon. She is the embodiment of the club La Havana Madrid: A cabaret singer equally comfortable leading a band, a sacred ritual, or playing a remembered loved one. She is connected to the past and future of each of the characters. Think La Lupe, Celia Cruz, and/or Olga Guillot if they had the power to control time, tides, tempo, and memory. Please submit 32 bars of a piece of Latin music. (Open to any style: cumbia, salsa, bolero, mambo, bomba, etc). - MARIA, Cuban, 14-16 years old
Brave, hopeful, full of a love of the sea and a deep desire to be reconnected with her family in Cuba. She lives with a foster family in Chicago. Comes alive when she goes to La Havana Madrid with her aunt and uncle. Loves to dance. - HENRY, Colombian, Mid-twenties
Outgoing and proud, Henry is deeply in love with his wife, Maruja. He moved to Chicago to establish a better life for them. To provide. Has never stopped making up for the lost time they had to spend apart. - MARUJA, Colombian, Mid-twenties
Reserved and strong, Maruja is deeply in love with her husband, Henry. Strong willed, she convinced her conservative family to let her marry him by proxy to join him in Chicago. Hates being the center of attention, but gifted with a wonderful singing voice. She hasn’t sung since they left Medellin but, tonight, at La Havana Madrid, she just might sing again. Please submit 32 bars of a piece of Latin music. (Open to any style: cumbia, salsa, bolero, mambo, bomba, etc). - CARLOS, Afro-Puerto Rican, late teens/early twenties
Fearless, sensitive, street-smart, lover of baseball, but hardened by the hate he receives for the color of his skin and his island home. An activist, A truth teller, A visionary documentarian who uses his camera to reflect and change the world around him. He needs us to wise up about and, ultimately, rise up against the atrocities facing his community. Note: We are specifically looking for someone who has a background rooted in the African-diaspora. We are aiming to highlight his experience as a darker-skinned man. - TONY, PUERTO Rican, 30s
Mixed Race radio host turned entrepreneur. Many doors have been closed in his face. Drafted to fight for a country that wasn’t his. The new proprietor, and ultimate host, of La Havana Madrid. Ready to fight against a hostile city bureaucracy to keep this joyous club thriving. He’s ushering in a new era of hope, and wants to keep it light on stage. - MYRNA, Puerto Rican, early twenties
A recently-crowned beauty queen longing for her island home. A witness, A survivor, she uses her time in the spotlight to tell us about the violence happening to her neighbors, to herself. Hers is a message of resilience. We must stand up each time we are beaten down, it is the only way to keep dancing. - CARPACHO, Colombian, late twenties/early 30s
A musician with a poet’s soul, a good friend of Henry. A born performer, great at telling jokes and musical histories. Still haunted by memories of immigration raids. Dreams of playing bass without an accent. Note: Actor does not have to be proficient at bass guitar. But bass guitarists are very much encouraged to submit.
