New Year New Draft is a unique new play development experience, where the audience gets to select which of San Diego’s new voices to support! Focused exclusively on local playwrights, 10 finalist scenes from new works were read in February 2025, after which the audience voted on which play they wanted Loud Fridge to support to produce a full-length script. Now, the big reveal is here, and Loud Fridge Theatre Group is excited to present:
(No) Exit to Mars
By Nicholas Scutti
It’s the not-too-distant-future, and Earth can barely support life, so an eccentric tech billionaire blasts off in a spaceship to colonize Mars. Travelling alongside him are his much-younger wife, his over-eager assistant and her skeptical husband, and an advanced AI program. When the hyper-sleep pods malfunction, however, all four humans will have no choice but to get along with each other in cramped quarters with dwindling supplies throughout the entire seven month journey. Interweaving class, climate change, sex, and technology, this dark comedy asks, “How much further can we take all this?” And, “whose fault is this, really?”
This staged reading is the culmination of 9 months of workshops, funding, and mentorship. Come celebrate with Loud Fridge and San Diego’s newest playwright and be among the first to witness (No) Exit to Mars!
New Year,
New Draft
Loud Fridge is committed to fostering creativity and innovation in the San Diego community. To that end, they’re excited to announce their new play incubator initiative, New Year New Draft. Local playwrights will submit one scene from their play-in-progress, and 10 of the submitted scenes will be read at a public event hosted by Loud Fridge. The audience will then vote on which play they’d like to see more of, and the winner will receive support from Loud Fridge to develop their play over the next year, culminating in a staged reading of a completed script in November 2025. Loud Fridge will provide the playwright with workshops, funding, and mentorship from Loud Fridge’s existing network of local playwrights, to support their work throughout the year.
