New Village Film Club: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

  • March 25
  • 5:30 pm - 7 pm

Join NVA Artistic Associates Frankie Alicea-Ford and Milena (Sellers) Phillips for our monthly New Village Film Club! This month, we will be discussing the critically-acclaimed film adaptation of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The film dramatizes a turbulent recording session in the 1920s for blues singer Ma Rainey as she confronts her band and her producers about her integrity and intentions as an artist.

“pure art, just as beautiful as it is heartbreaking.” – The Chicago Reader

Two searing performances–by Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman-make this filmmore than just a faithful adaptation of a great theater piece and preserves one of August Wilson’s enduring works for all time, enacted by a dream cast.” – Leonard Maltin

“You never forget that you’re watching a play on film, but that’s okay because the dialogue snaps and leaps — it’s so intense and so exquisite, and yet the emotion beneath it is real.” – NPR

Screen the film in advance on Netflix, and join us on Thursday, March. 25 from 5:30-7pm for a free community discussion.
