FUNDAMENTALS OF IMPROV WITH PATRICK MCINNIS
LEVEL II IMPROV: The Game of the Scene
Saturday Mornings | October 25th-December 13th
11:15am-1:15pm
Improv II at New Village Arts builds off of the concepts learned in Improv I. This class focuses on refining and expanding the fundamental skills learned in the previous level and introducing new concepts such as editing, group scenes, emotional engagement, and more. The class emphasizes identifying and playing the “game of the scene,” a core concept in ‘long form’ improv. Students learn to recognize patterns and comedic themes within scenes and how to heighten these elements for maximum comedic impact. This principle helps students create scenes that are not only funny but also intellectually engaging.

LEVEL V IMPROV: The Deconstruction
Saturday Mornings | October 25th-December 13th
9:00am-11:00am
Level V is where legacy meets discovery. You’ll step into the lineage of Chicago improv’s canon, taking your craft into new territory. While Level IV taught you to master Harold, Level V invites you to deconstruct — to dig into a single scene and let it unfold into its own universe. This elective honors a tradition born in Chicago under Del Close and The Family, where deconstruction was conceived as a radical new way to dissect a relationship and let that crack open the rest of the performance. Like your Level IV class, this is not about gimmicks — it’s about depth, connection, and rigorous structure.
In this class, you will:
- Perform full Deconstructions in class and at a showcase.
- Anchor your set with a rich opening that plants the seed.
- Hunt for the central truth or pattern your opening reveals.
- Expand into commentary, tangents, and thematic scenes.
- Practice weaving momentum in a “run” toward resonance.
- Work as an ensemble to honor and surprise each other.
- Bring everything back to your opening in a unified arc.
- Receive tailored coaching to sharpen your voice inside the form.
