Join NVA Artistic Associates Frankie Alicea-Ford and Milena (Sellers) Phillips for our monthly New Village Film Club! This month, we will be discussing Lee Daniels’ critically-acclaimed film The United States Vs. Billie Holiday. This historical biopic stars Andra Day as Billie Holiday, and tells the story of her experience in the 1940s, when she was targeted by the government in an effort to racialize the war on drugs, ultimately aiming to stop her from singing her controversial song “Strange Fruit.”
“You simply cannot say enough about what Day achieves in this role, particularly being a first-time actor. She gets beneath the skin of Holiday, giving a raw and honest portrait of an artist under duress but determined in her belief that she can use that art and talent to make the world a more just place.” – Deadline Hollywood
“Day mesmerizes” as Billie Holiday – The Hollywood Reporter
