Teatro Pueblo Nuevo

Introducing NVA's - New Village Reinas! Our first all drag queen performance! Join us this Saturday, 9/19 at 7pm to enjoy some of San Diego's best Latinx drag queens as they dance, impersonate, and lip-sync the HOUSE DOWN. Co-Produced by Teatro Pueblo Nuevo and Mother of the House of Z, Barbie Z, and sponsored in part by the California Arts Council. Grab a drink, log onto Venmo, and prepare for an evening of incredible performances, high energy, and lots of laughter that honor and celebrate our Latinx culture! Followed by a talkback with the Queens where we will discuss how we define Drag as an art form, how these queens got their start, and how we can support our Queer and Latinx communities! As well as a Q&A portion where you will have a chance to ask your questions! And don't forget to tip your Queens

TEATRO PUEBLO NUEVO is NVA's new bilingual and bicultural outreach initiative. TPN features Latinx-centered community outreach events and theatrical productions at New Village Arts.

TPN began its programming with the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebración in September of 2017. This event celebrated the presence of Latinx culture in San Diego with interactive art by Foundry Artists and a dance floor that got everyone up and dancing! It featured performances by Melba Novoa Flamenco, a presentation of Cuban rueda de casino by EscoRueda, and the youth group Sonares de mi Tierra from the House of Panama in Balboa Park.

In December of 2017, TPN produced its first show, the all-ages bilingual musical CINDERELLA EATS RICE AND BEANS: A SALSA FAIRY TALE by Karen Zacarias with music by Deborah Wicks-La Puma, directed by Associate Artistic Director Nadia Guevara. Thanks to sponsorship from Wells Fargo and The Loftin firm, this show was presented as a free event for our community.

In January 2018, NVA presented the first TPN mainstage production, CLOUD TECTONICS by the Oscar-nominated José Rivera, directed by Herbert Siguenza of Culture Clash and Pixar’s Coco.

TPN would not be possible without the support of our community partners: Mana de North County San Diego, Tierra Caliente Academy of the Arts, and the Cal State San Marcos Latinx Center.

Noemi de la Puente earned her MFA in Theatre Arts from the University of Iowa, her MSE from Princeton University, and her BSE from the California Institute of Technology. She is the librettist and lyricist of the musical comedy MANUEL VERSUS THE STATUE OF LIBERTY (Winner, 2014 NYMF Developmental Reading Series Award; Winner, 2015 New York Music Festival’s Special Award for Social Relevance and Impact, Nominated, 2015 NYMF’s Best Musical Award; semi-finalist, 2016 O’Neill National Music Theatre Conference).
