Artists in Schools

New Village Arts has three different In-School Programs for local high schools:

  • Shakespeare: NVA offers a variety of programs focused on Shakespeare, from one-day workshops to full productions;
  • Verbitas: This exciting new program by Blake McCarty has been designed to showcase the diversity of student experience in North County San Diego high schools. The project borrows community-organizing and engagement methods, including open forum discussion and intergenerational/intercultural conversations, to enhance student agency and representation through the medium of documentary theatre. The end result is an arena for authentic youth voices that reflect their communities and the issues that are relevant to them.
  • Production Guidance: NVA will bring professional teaching artists into the schools to help the school with a full theatrical presentation, giving students the opportunity to have a professional experience while still in high school.

Shakespeare in the Schools feedback:

  • "My experience in Romeo and Juliet was super positive!! It was my first time ever doing a full-length Shakespeare production and I loved it!! I had an amazing and unforgettable experience and I would definitely do it again if I have the opportunity!"
  • "This process of reviewing one of William Shakespeare's most well-known plays has brought me closer to comprehending Shakespearean texts... this collaboration has put a strong emphasis on the safety and well being of all actors... I feel stronger as an actor and more prepared to be a part of further productions after this entire collaboration process."
  • "There was always a very professional environment during rehearsals. It was a really cool and educational experience and I think I grew as an actor. I really enjoyed this show!"
  • "Having a director from the theater company come down to help direct our play was a great learning experience... I was also pushed farther than I thought I could possibly go as an actor and learned just how to push myself. I was given ideas and ways to behave as a character that I would never have thought of otherwise which was enlightening. I hope that NVA Theater continues to work with local schools."
  • "This was my third experience with New Village Arts and our Shakespeare Unit. I have thoroughly enjoyed it each year and I have been able to grow so much in my overall knowledge of Shakespeare."

Juvenile detention students feedback:

  • “This class helped us express ourselves in words and writing rather than just anger like we usually do.”
  • “This was a great class because we all got to share our life stories, and learn other people have been through the same things or know how we feel.”
  • “Other people should get to do this class because it changes you inside."
