POSITION: Front of House Staff (House Manager, Box Office, Bartender)

REPORTS TO: Director of Connectivity
FLSA STATUS: Part-time/Seasonal /Hourly Wage
New Village Arts has an opening for Front of House Staff.  This position will cross train between House Management, Box Office and Bartender.  The House Manager is responsible for overseeing all public areas of the theatre, including the lobby, concessions, restroom facilities, and the main performance space. The House Manager supervises all volunteer ushers during an event, and ensures that the experience of each patron is enjoyable and safe. The Box Office Representative is responsible for assisting patrons with the purchase of tickets in person, over the phone, or by email.  The Bartender serves hard and soft drinks to patrons during preshow and intermission of performances.  This is a part-time/seasonal, non-benefited position that will work 10 - 25+ hours per week generally 6 p.m. – 11 p.m. Thursday – Saturday plus matinees on weekends while shows are running. Shows run Thursday through Sunday for 4 to 5 weeks, often followed by 4 to 5 weeks of no shows. Occasional work during midweek and holiday events may be required as well. Compensation is $10/hr.
  • Supervise and provide basic training for volunteers.
  • Address all safety and appearance issues in public area of the building, including lobby, theatre house, restrooms, and exterior.
  • Remain in lobby or theatre throughout the performance. Maintain post in a prominent location at intermission and following performances to manage patron inquires and incidents.
  • Resolve seating problems, coordinating between patrons and box office.  
  • Seat latecomers and patrons returning to their seats during the performance, using a flashlight and observing hold policies. Patrons should not enter the theatre unescorted once show is running.
  • Compile information about performance for House report.
  • Coordinate with the Production/Stage Manager on performance days to ensure the smooth running of the event between backstage and Front of House operations.
  • Work cooperatively with the Box Office and Production Manager to improve operations of Front of House, develop new procedures, and implement new initiatives.
  • After performances check that the audience has cleared the building, turn off lights in public areas, and lock front doors of building.
  • Work closely with Patrons Services Manager to provide the best possible experience for our patrons.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 45 lbs.
  • May have to "refresh" bathroom.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service to patrons
  • Assist patrons with purchase of tickets in person, by phone or email
  • Create door list and tickets prior to performance
  • Greet patrons at will call and hand out tickets and programs
  • Help patrons with exchanges
  • Answer questions about theatre and productions
  • Make confirmation calls
  • Arrange group sales
  • Alert house manager to patron special needs--handicapped entrance, service animals
  • Learn and become proficient in Patron Manager CRM software
  • Assist with administrative projects as needed
  • Create daily sales reports

  • Setting up and breaking down the bar service station
  • Selling a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages during preshow and intermission
  • Providing excellent customer service while working in a fast-paced environment
  • Counting cash accurately and making correct change quickly
  • Understanding and ensuring all State and Federal alcohol serving policies are followed
  • Adhering to all laws, rules, regulations pursuant to California Alcohol and Beverage Control
  • Ensuring all sanitation procedures are followed pursuant to state and local regulations as well as OSHA requirements
  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be of legal age to prepare and sell alcoholic beverages
  • Previous experience in theatrical or house management desired but not required.
  • Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Must maintain a professional demeanor and image, as this is a customer-facing position.
  • Providing exemplary customer service must be of the utmost importance.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision and as a team member, and effectively supervise volunteers.
  • Must be a strong manager, motivating and inspiring volunteers to perform to the best of their abilities.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word and Outlook, is a plus.
  • Requires ability to work flexible and extended hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
