Featuring Dana Case*, Tom Deak, Manny Fernandes*, Jonah Gercke, Kristianne Kurner*, Amanda Morrow*, Alyssa Schindler & Tom Zohar*

The Dark at the Top of the Stairs, a rarely produced Pulitzer Prize winning drama by American playwright William Inge, was the dramatist’s last successful play. Dark was first presented at the small Music Box Theatre in New York on December 5, 1957, with a splendid cast consisting of Eileen Heckart, Pat Hingle and Teresa Wright and directed by Elia Kazan. The play ran for 468 performances. Warner Bros purchased the play, and it was made into a film in 1960 starring Robert Preston, Dorothy McGuire, Eve Arden, Shirley Knight, and a very young Angela Lansbury. Come see what NVA’s Ensemble can do with this show about love, tolerance and acceptance.

under Delicia Turner Sonnenberg’s gifted direction…the production grows from the special chemistry between Joshua Everett Johnson and Kristianne Kurner. Spurred by his maddening experiences with censorship, Ibsen wrote An Enemy of the People to depict how society deliberately and ruthlessly ostracizes its truth-tellers. When Dr. Stockmann discovers that his city’s baths are contaminated, he immediately sets out to warn his fellow citizens. Terrified of losing the baths’ tourist dollars, the citizens refuse to accept Dr. Stockmann’s claims. Ibsen captures the courage of one man fighting the tyranny of the majority in a play that remains inescapably modern.

Come and get your Irish on!

Saturday, March 15th, 2008
by Elaine Gingery

There’s no better way to get ready for St. Patrick’s Day than to spend some time with the Mundy girls…

MundyGirls

“…an especially eye-catching turn by Grace Delaney as the good-natured, cheeky sister Maggie. It also has Friel’s lyrical language, gentle humor and intuitive sense of place…affecting moments, nicely turned laughs and
striking visuals”

- Jim Hebert, San Diego Union-Tribune, www.signonsandiego.com

“Characters fall in love through dance. They connect through dance; they celebrate identity and culture through it. When the five Mundy sisters break out in spontaneous frenzied movement, brought on by the traditional Irish music issuing forth from the radio, it’s an expression of their pent-up sexual desire and hope in the face of daunting circumstances… Fluidly directed by Esther Emery, the play resides in moments of wordlessness - a squeal of delight, a severe look, a tentative touch.”

- Jennifer Chung,
www.sandiego.com

“…under Esther Emery’s sensitive direction New Village Arts captured the play’s atmosphere — the intrusion of pagan energy into traditional stolidity: a combination of longing and partial release”

-Jeff Smith, San Diego Reader, www.sdreader.com

“a moving, poetic and tender-sweet performance by Joshua Everett Johnson…New Village Arts’ executive artistic director Kristianne Kurner leads the cast with a steely, razor-edged performance as Kate, the family breadwinner who has just lost her last hope for love and is about to lose her job as well. Balancing Kurner’s fierceness is Grace Delaney in a playful, bawdy performance as Maggie. Amanda Sitton plays Christine with a quiet, dreamy yearning. Amanda Morrow is closed-up tight as the frustrated Agnes, who secretly longs for her sister’s beau. And PJ Anbey is slow and childlike as the gullible Rose…Manny Fernandes plays the huckster Gerry with a happy optimism…And Charlie Riendeau is wry and meditative as the defrocked Father Jack.”

-Pam Kragen, North County Times, www.nctimes.com

(March 16th at 7:30 PM) with

Brian Friel’s
MOLLY SWEENEY
Directed by Amanda Sitton
Featuring NVA Ensemble Members Joshua Everett Johnson, Kristianne Kurner & Jack Missett

About Molly Sweeney, by Vincent Canby in the New York Times:

Brian Friel has been recognized as Ireland’s greatest living playwright almost since the first production of “Philadelphia, Here I Come!” in Dublin in 1964. In succeeding years he has dazzled us with plays that speak in a language of unequaled poetic beauty and intensity. It makes no difference that some of the plays have been box office hits and some of them flops. The talent has been consistent. Such dramas as “Translations,” “Dancing at Lughnasa” and “Wonderful Tennessee,” among others, have given him a privileged place in our theater.

The production of his latest work, “Molly Sweeney,” confirms that Mr. Friel still writes like a dream.

Set in Mr. Friel’s imaginary town of Ballybeg, in the northwest of Donegal, “Molly Sweeney” is the melancholy tale of a 41-year-old woman who, blind since the age of 10 months, suddenly regains her sight after an operation. Molly agrees to the operation not because she has ever felt deprived by her blindness. She does it to please her eccentric but adoring husband, Frank, and Mr. Rice, the once-renowned, now alcoholic surgeon who dreams of restoring himself by restoring Molly.

Lughnasa: Week Two

Thursday, March 13th, 2008
by Kirstianne Kurner

We are about to embark on week two of DANCING AT LUGHNASA. Ticket sales are going great and word-0f-mouth is very positive. We already have people coming back to see the show a second time. Some of the reviews were a bit mixed, but that is to be expected. Opening night (when most of the critics were there) was a bit rough - by Sunday, the show was working wonderfully. The cast and crew are an amazing group of people - everyone is working so hard and committed to also having a great time.

It should be fun to do the show on St. Patty’s weekend.

We have now cast a number of the roles in PRELUDE TO A KISS! Joshua Johnson and I are playing Peter & Rita, with Kathryn Herbruck as my mom, Tim Parker as Peter’s best friend, Li-Anne Rowswell as Aunt Dorothy and Leah and Don Evans as Tom and the Minister. We are still casting Dr Boyle and Uncle Fred. Delicia Turner-Sonnenberg is directing, with Esther Emery doing the set design. It’s such a beautiful play - a romantic comedy that isn’t too “precious” or “sweet”. Rehearsals start next week - no rest for us! Check out the great photo for the show, styled by Amanda Sitton and taken by Adam Brick._dsc6682.jpg

The new offices are coming along nicely. Elaine Gingery (our new Managing Director) is fabulous - and everything is beginning to get put into its proper places. It’s so nice not to be working out of my garage any more!

Hope you all enjoy the new blog - please share your thoughts with us as well!

See you at the theatre (New Village Arts Theatre, of course)…

The great reviews keep coming in…

“These are splendid portrayals. Playing against her usual type, VanWormer is excruciatingly funny and oddly beautiful in her garish getup (costumes by Amanda Sitton). With breakneck speed, Johnson — though the character is manic, the actor’s mature technique is manifest — delivers an 11th-hour monologue worthy of Hamlet. Young Zohar further establishes himself as one of the city’s finest young actors.” Charlene Baldridge, La Jolla Village News

“about as fine a set of performances as you’ll see” Jean Lowerison, Gay & Lesbian Times

People say the nicest things…

“Top-notch cast makes ‘Humble Boy’ a hive of attention…. With tones of Shakespeare lurking in the background (”Hamlet,” to be specific), along with a gardener (Tom Deak) who comes and goes at the most curious moments, (think “Sixth Sense”) chaos and black hole theories being thrown around, garden chases and arses being pinched by too-old-for-that-stuff adults, an illegitimate child revelation and a nutcake friend, stuff is bound to happen. And it does in the New Village Arts Theatre’s West Coast premiere production of Charlotte Jones’ “Humble Boy.” Carol Davis, www.turbula.net

“This Humble Boy is well worth the trip to North County for several reasons, including a look at Chovick’s masterwork, about which I can only muster a muffled click of the tongue and a sheepish grin of amazement.” Martin Jones Westlin, San Diego City Beat

“The Humble’s garden is an interesting place to be, full of bee trivia, astrophysics, and, most centrally, family strife… often really funny… the new space is refreshing - it’s in downtown Carlsbad on State Street. And for the next week, it comes equipped with its own English garden and bee hive!” – Angela Carone, KPBS CultureLust
